Why do I have condensation on my windows?

This is such a common problem and usually occurs while you are sleeping. It occurs on the inside of your windows when the air outside is colder than the air inside. During the winter months we use heaters to warm our homes. When the air outside is colder than inside, it causes condensation on the inside of the window. Often this becomes evident with traces of moisture on your window sills or mold on the back of your curtains. It can also be evident on the walls surrounding your windows.

There are three main cures for this problem.

1. Double glazing - expensive, but it will usually solve the problem.

2. Ensure that, if you have air conditioning, you are running it on the DRY cycle. This removes the excess moisture in the air that contributes to the moisture forming on your windows. (If this does not work, it would be an indicator that perhaps your AC is undersized for the area that it is heating/cooling, or that it needs a little TLC by way of cleaning.)

3. A dehumidifier - these are usually very energy efficient. You simply place it in the room that has the problem, set the humidity level between 50-55% and it will only operate when the humidity exceeds that level. They have a bucket system where the bucket holds that excess moisture and you simply empty when full. It will certainly show you just how much moisture is actually in the air.
