We've all seen a pair of moldy shoes in our closet. Usually, the reason for this is that the shoes have been placed in the closet while they are damp. The dampness can come from walking through puddles or simply from perspiration. There are more complex reasons, this is just the most common.
Mold loves moisture and seeks it out as one of its food sources. Your damp shoes may as well have a bullseye on them and sign saying 'choose me!'
Does this mean the end of the road for your favourite shoes? The short answer is usually NO.
Do you need to have a professional clean them? NO, not necessarily.
Did you know that sunlight is one of the natural enemies of mold? Try putting them out in the sunlight and when they are dry, try cleaning them with a microfibre cloth. If you need to use a little bit of water, simply ensure that you sit them in the sunlight again until they are completely dry.
